Rome's Rant: What to do about the worst team in the NFL

Updated: Oct 4, 2023

The product on the field tells its own tale, doesn't it? The offense has never been in rhythm for more than a series or two each game. The defense can't seem to stop the most pedestrian quarterbacks from looking like hall of famers. This team is atrocious from top to bottom, and it all starts at the top. The offense is ranked 32nd in the league. The defense is ranked 32nd in the league. The Chicago Bears have hit rock bottom. But why?

We've all seen Justin Fields miss wide open receivers. We've watched him sit back in the pocket 4, 5, 6 seconds before getting destroyed while his running back was running down the seam, or DJ Moore was coming across the backside in route. We know Justin Fields is definitely a part of the problem with this team. He needs to make better decisions and progress through his reads more quickly.

The offensive blocking as a scheme is terrible. There are many plays that have players blocking absolutely nothing, a play where Cole Kmet actually gets in the way of Darnell Wright's block and causes Justin Fields to get pressured quickly. The effort on blocks has been far below average. On some plays it looks as if the player isn't expecting to make a block. We've all seen Chase Claypool completely whiff on several blocks, but did you see Robert Tonyan completely avoid a block and let the back blow up the play in the backfield. One block can make or break a 3rd down conversion and we're seeing missed blocks consistently by this offense. Overall, the playmakers have been average at best. Roschon Johnson clearly needs to be the lead back on this team. Force feed him the ball even when they stack eight in the box, force them to stop that beast, and send DJ Moore, Darnell Mooney, and Chase Claypool out on your ten and fifteen yard routes with play action. Establish the run! We've seen the dropped passes, and I'm not excusing them from dropping the ball, but drops are a part of the game. Establish the run and use play action with your mobile quarterback. Let them make plays.

This team is defeated and lost believe in the coaching staff, scheme, culture, all of it. Look at what they've done to our quarterback. He's a shell of his former self both on and off the field.

Does all of this make sense so far?

Can we see all agree that I've hit on all of the major areas of concerns on this team? We know the stats, we see how bad they all are, but can we agree that these areas of concern can be fixed with better coaching, scheming and play calling? At the very least, fix the scheme and give your offense a solid playbook that fits the team.

Hiring practices have always been interesting in Chicago, but the Bears have a way or mixing and matching Presidents, General Managers, Coaches and Quarterbacks in a way that's never made much sense to the fan base. In 2021, when the Chicago Bears hired Ryan Poles they had already selected the coaches that he would have to choose from rather than going through his own process and hiring a coach that he may have wanted, perhaps someone with experience in developing a young quarterback like Justin Fields.

Instead, the McCaskey's hired a first year, defensive minded Head Coach.

"Wait, what? The Chicago Bears hired a first year, defensive minded Head Coach with a second year, explosive young quarterback? They definitely hired a quarterback guru to mentor Justin Fields then, right?" I ask myself, because at this point in being a Bears fan, I'm obviously insane.

No, they hired Aaron Rodgers passing coordinator to be the Offensive Coordinator. The question we all need to ask ourselves is...Did Aaron Rodgers need a passing coordinator? At this point in Aaron Rodgers career, his passing coordinator gets his fucking coffee for him every morning and cashes his paycheck. Legitimately, no one in the league believes that Luke Getsy's position was important in Green Bay. He's simply here with Robert Tonyan and Lucas Patrick to sabotage the Chicago Bears. They're traitors and must be tarred and feathered at the 50 yard line of Soldier Field.

Nonsense, you say? Keep reading, I'm not entirely crazy...

With the Chicago Bears at the bottom of the league in every measurable category that matters, does Kevin Warren clean house, GM, coaching staff, players and maintenance man?

Seriously, does he assert his power as President of the Chicago Bears and bring in his own team from top to bottom? Few on this team are safe at the trade deadline if this team continues on this path. If the Chicago Bears win zero games this season there will be a complete culture shift at Halas Hall and it may start with Ryan Poles. I'm a huge Poles fan, I'd like to pretend he is safe, but we are talking about the legitimate worst team in the NFL through three weeks.

Its that bad right now, folks. It really is. Think about this. You've read all this nonsense, and we haven't even said a word about the worst DEFENSE in the league.

Yep, here in Chicago.

The Monsters of the Midway...?

These aren't monsters.

There's not one monster on that team right now, outside of Roschon Johnson and Darnell Wright on offense. Not one monster on defense. NOT ONE MONSTER! The defensive backfield has been down since week 1 with injuries so I can understand getting torn up in the passing game back there THEN you add absolutely NO quarterback pressure from the front four.

And why blitz? Who needs a blitz when you can give the opposing quarterback until the next draft to throw the football to whoever they want because our defensive backfield is absolutely bad. No pressure.

Not convinced the locker room is lost? Still think this is the right coaching staff? Listen to Roschon Johnson and TJ Edwards address the media after the loss to Kansas City.

Its all bad, my ferocious Bears fandom. It is ALL bad. And when its all bad there isn't just one move that needs to be made, unfortunate as it may be.

Some fans screaming how bad Justin Fields is. Some fans screaming how bad the coaching staff is. Some fans screaming how bad the ownership is. Some fans screaming how bad the players are. How bad Ryan Poles is. How bad HR is. Nah, I'm playin, we all know HR is terrible...

When does it all change? When does it all get better? Is there a magic wand that can fix all of the glaring issues with this team? Are we all going to be committed before the end of the season?

Time will tell so stay tuned and most importantly, Bear Down!
