Caleb Takes Beating In Bears First Loss Of The Season

Caleb Williams started strong in last night's prime-time game at Houston. Williams completed his first five passes for 55 yards but the Texans' defense denied the elusive first offensive touchdown of the season, and once again, the Bears settled for a field goal. The 53-yarder from Cairo Santos tied the game at 3-3. The Bears offense would finally reach the end zone with 32 seconds left in the second quarter when Khalil Herbert scored from 2 yards out. The offense would only muster one more field goal in the second half, falling 19-13 in week two, dropping their record to 1-1.

Rough Night For The Offensive Line

The Texans' defensive line and a heavy dose of blitzing put relentless pressure on Caleb Williams all night. Williams was pressured on 40 of his 44 dropbacks. He was sacked seven times and was under duress the entire game. For the second consecutive week, the Bears rushing game was non-existent, Swift, Herbert, and Homer combined for only 27 yards on 17 carries for a minuscule 1.6 yards per carry. Caleb, running for his life, led the team with 44 yards on five carries.

Defense Once Again Plays Well In Second Half

C.J. Stroud led the Houston offense on three scoring drives, building a 13-3 lead. And led one more drive to allow Houston to boot a 59-yard field goal to close out the first half scoring. Houston's kicker, Ka'imi Fairbairn connected on all three first-half attempts from 56, 47, and 59 yards. The Bears' defense stiffened in the second half, allowing just one field goal. Kyler Gordon missed an interception that would have given the Bears the lead. Gordon jumped and batted a pass and he laid out to grab the ball, but it hit the ground before he was able to possess the ball and it was ruled incomplete.

The Defense has only allowed three points in the second half this season. In Week One, the Tennessee Titans failed to score in the second half.

The problems along the offensive line continue to plague this team three years into the Ryan Poles era. The entire unit was embarrassed by the Houston defense.

Bears Next Game

Chicago travels to Indianapolis on Sunday to play a Colts team that cannot stop the run. The Packers ran for 261 yards in week two and Houston ran for 213 yards on the Colt defense in week one. If the Bears' running game can't get on track against this defense, it will be a very disappointing season.

New and Notes

Despite being questionable before the game, Rome Odunze was on the field for 66 of Chicago's offensive snaps.

Keenan Allen did not dress for the game after aggravating his heel in week one. Velus Jones was also inactive Sunday night. Tyler Scott and Collin Johnson both saw their first game action. Scott, who was inactive last week was only on the field for 3 plays. Johnson only saw the field for one play.

The Bears play the Indianapolis Colts next Sunday. The game will be televised on CBS. Kickoff is at Noon, Central time.
